Carnival on Lake Como

Carnival on Lake Como

The Carnival is an event that draws its origins from the Saturnalia of ancient Rome or from the Dionysiac festivals of the classical Greek period. During these festivities it was tradition to indulge in joking and playing and masking up made the rich and the poor unrecognizable, thus making social differences disappear.

The proverb associated with the carnival derived from the ancient Latin saying which mentions "semel in anno licet insanire"  ("once a year it is permissible to go crazy") says a lot about tradition...!

In Italy, each region celebrates Carnival in its own way, but the common points remain colors and the desire to smile.

In Venice we celebrate one of the most famous Carnivals in the world; in Viareggio (Tuscany) and Acireale (Sicily) the allegorical floats are the masters; while in Ivrea there is the famous Battle of the Oranges and in Sciacca splendid papier-mâché works are created.

But we too, in our beautiful Lake Como, are committed to celebrating in our own way!

Each town sets up fantastic carnival-themed events. Even the schools organize ad hoc days to cheer up the school hours and spread the culture of jokes and joy among the little ones with typical sweets (the Chiacchiere), confetti, streamers and games of all kinds.

A magical moment that even in Domaso is celebrated by adults and children through the "Carnevale da Sballo" organized by the Domaso oratory in collaboration with the Pastoral Community of Domaso and Vercana.

DJ set, masked parade and entertainment between laughter and a newfound serenity after the pandemic; all accompanied by the suggestive landscape that our Lake Como offers us in every season.
