The FORTE FUENTES is a 17th century Spanish fort built at the request by the Governor of the State of Milan, Pedro Enriquez de Acevedo Count of Fuentes, to prevent any possibility of expansion by the Republic of the Three Gray Leagues (modern Swiss Grisons) who wanted expand its domain from Valtellina and Valchiavenna to the Upper Lake Como.
Today, it is one of the most important historical sites in the Alto Lario.
Built in 1603, Forte Fuentes rfunctioned until 1736, when it became involved in the fighting for the War of the Polish Succession. It passed from the Austrians, up to the French (then allies of the Piedmontese), passed again to the Austrians and definitively lost its military value in 1782, when the emperor Franz Joseph declared it decayed as a fortress together with the Castle of Lecco.
The ancient structure is located on Montecchio Est, a hill overlooking the Pian di Spagna nature reserve and is one of the few examples still existing and still perfectly "legible" of the Spanish domination of the century described by Manzoni in the Promessi Sposi. It was definitively destroyed in 1796 by the Napoleonic troops of General Rambeau by order of Napoleon who already at the time no longer represented any danger. In 1916, due to the First World War, some works were carried out and where eight armored cannon emplacements were created with an attached underground powder magazine and reserves. This historical passage takes us geographically and historically back to the nearby Forte Montecchio Nord, built between 1912 and 1914, not far from this Montecchio.
Both structures can be visited - consult the opening hours before venturing out! - and preserve an important piece of the history of our territory.
Forte di Fuentes is located about 10 minutes by car from Piccolo Camping, therefore a few kilometers from Domaso. It can be reached by own means, by public transport and by bike.
